KO16: Wiki v.s AcademiXML

[academixml]

So is using AcademiXML basically like writing the academic paper with a wiki?

[/anonymous]

They’re both online and collaborative. They’re both open for access, open for contributions. They both make the boundaries between author, editor and reader unclear. Although it’s true AcademiXML and wiki share very similar characteristics my reply to the above tweet is:

sputniko5putniko @bunguman No!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

11:53 PM Sep 20th from web in reply to bunguman

I’d like to make clear the differences between using a wiki and AcademiXML for academic writing in knowledge objects [knowledge_object_id:17],[knowledge_object_id:18] and [knowledge_object_id:19].

KO11: Tweets on Text and Writing

[academixml]
[collection]
[hiromi]
Below are tweets surrounding my twitter feed (under the pseudoname 5putniko) on text and writing, made on 13th September, 2009.

The tweets were made in Japanese. English Translation follows the original Japanese text, not necessarily under the 140 character limit in Twitter (It seems that the Japanese language is easier to fit more into smaller texts )

If you are unfamiliar with Twitter’s language conventions, please view [knowledge_object_id:10]

sputniko5putniko I basically grew up right in the middle of the internet generation, and I feel that the way I perceive reading and writing text is completely different from the generation before. Deciding on a dissertation or a book “topic” and writing linearly to support it feels absolutely tedious and pas·sé

sputnikoh4nz I completely agree RT @5putniko I basically grew up right in the middle of the internet generation and I feel that the way I perceive reading and writing text is completely different from the generation before. sputnikoh4nzさ らに言えば、論文を査読する世代との ジェネレーションギャップもあるので悩ましい.

sputnikoh4nz To add to this there’s also a generation gap with the tutors who review our dissertations which also makes a mess.  I guess my course professors have worked with the so called ‘new media’ from an early stage, but I think they themselves are messily trying to figure out what writing styles they’re seeking in their students

sputniko7gano@5putniko I guess I’ve got a tendency to make a database of articles and then write.  I can’t write without a PC.

sputnikomirka@5putniko Totally agree linear/bloated writing is dead. I practically abstain from physical books now and feel less and less guilty about it

KO1: My dissertation probably summarizes in about 3 Tweets

[academixml]
[collection]
[hiromi]

My dissertation probably

summarizes in

about 3 Tweets

[britney] “I think Rabbi Pearlstein is really pissed at me. Today in Jewish class he was going through the Halakha, which I thought was the Jewish word for Hannah Montana but turns out to be like a whole bunch of boring laws about days of the week and pork and shit, and I was like, “Rabbi P., is there any way you could break this down into a bunch of tweets? I’ll read it on my phone on the way to rehearsal.” [/britney]

The excerpt is from a satiric New Yorker item containing entries from Britney Spears’ conversion diary, in response to the story reported in The Sun about Spears converting to Judaism.  I presume Spears here is portrayed as a symbol of the dumbing twitter generation in America, but I feel there’s some truth in her dialogue.  I have repeatedly found myself attending conferences or reading lengthy books and thinking – “Can’t this stuff just be summarized in about 3 Tweets?”

[hiromitweet]

sputniko5putniko I’m from the Skimming Generation.  Reading journals I just cant stop thinking  “This stuff probably summarizes in about 3 tweets.”

from 5putniko‘s Twitter feed, 13 September 2009

[/hiromitweet]

Yes, I have become extremely attention deficit.  I have difficulties staying on one web page to read texts longer than 1000 words (and I’m sure my Twitter use is decreasing that number) My mind can’t stop hopping from one hyperlink to another, my knowledge seems to be primarily constructed through skimming through tags, blog posts, streamed videos and twitter feeds, as much as, or probably more than, studying grand authors like Derrida, Foucalt or Latour.
