<h1>Twitter&#8217;s Language Conventions</h1>
<p>I&#8217;m tweeting under the user name <a href="http://twitter.com/5putniko">5putniko</a>, posting updates for my artist alias <a href="http://www.sputniko.com/">Sputniko!</a>.  At this time of writing (September 14, 2009) 5putniko has 180 Twitter followers which includes her fans and friends.</p>
<p><em> </em><a href="http://twitter.com">Twitter</a> is a popular micro-blogging site where users can post their status updates, ponders, ideas, news feeds and banal diaries (&#8216;I ate a banana&#8217;) as long as the post contains less than 140 characters.  These posts are called &#8220;Tweets&#8221; and &#8220;Tweeting&#8221; refers to posting these mini updates to the site.  Users must &#8216;follow&#8217; other users to read their tweets.</p>
<p>The &#8216;@&#8217; mark is used in reply of a tweet.  For example, <a href="http://twitter.com/5putniko">@5putniko</a> means that the tweet is in reply to the user <a href="http://twitter.com/5putniko">5putniko</a>&#8217;s tweet. &#8220;RT&#8221; stands for &#8220;Retweeting&#8221; and it is used when the user wants to tweet a whole excerpt of another user&#8217;s tweet. An example use would be: RT @5putniko I ate a banana<br />
